Bermuda Hospitals Board and Dana Farber Cancer Center

According to a press release issued by the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) on August 28, 2008, the BHB has entered into a formal agreement with the Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston, Massachusetts “to develop services for people in Bermuda.”

The press release refers specifically to the development of a prostate cancer program to be initiated in October 2008.

Herman Tucker, Chairman of the Bermuda Hospitals Board, is quoted as stating, “This formal agreement is a major landmark in cancer services in Bermuda. …  Our existing Oncology Team will continue to be the foundation of our service, but now they will be able to work in partnership with Dana Farber to utilise a depth and breadth [of services] that our size in Bermuda would prevent us from achieving alone. The benefit to patients is an integrated, international cancer care service, where on-island services are strengthened and access to care is improved.”

  1. My wife has been diagonosed with pancreatic cancer — she has had surgery, the tumor could not be removed , we are waiting for her to gain strength before beginning chemo and radiation. We have been told there is only a 10% chance that the chemo/rad treatments will shrink the tumor enough to be removed; no evidence of spreading at this time. What are your suggestions for the next step in her treatment? Thanks!

  2. Mr. Flaherty:

I think you need to contact people at the Pancreatic Cancer Network. They will be much more knowledgeable about pancreatic cancer than we are.
