Incidence of Prostate Cancer in Barbados

According to a report in the Barbados Advocate on Friday, “Barbados is one of the countries with the highest number of prostate cancer deaths in the world.” The Barbados Advocate went on to say that Barbados was losing 80 to 90 of its men annually to the disease. (See follow-up report on Caribbean Net News.)

The article quotes Dr. David Padmore, a urologist, as stating that, ”In this part of the world, not only is prostate cancer the number one solid organ cancer in men, but it is the number one cancer killer in men.”

He explained that racial make up is a key factor in explaining the high incidence of prostate cancer in the Caribbean. He also noted that the highest incidences of prostate cancer were found men of African descent.

Available substantiated data can neither confirm nor deny the data proposed by Padmore. Prostate Cancer Caribbean suspects that the data quoted are probably accurate, but it would help if better and more current data were available.

  1. I would be very happy to help given that I’m currently pursuing a Masters in Public Health with emphasis in Medical Epidemiology and am very certain that the information you share will be of tremendous value to me.
